The PGA’s first ever amateur best-ball event is coming to the Pinehurst Resort September 10-12. This “National Championship” event is the culmination of a series of 2007 local and sectional championships, and features a $200,000 guaranteed purse.

Three of Pinehurt’s most recognized courses will challenge the field: Course’s #8, #6 and the famous Donald Ross #2. Course #8, the Centennial Course, opened in 1996 and was designed by Tom Fazio. It’s a 72-par course and measures almost 7,100 yds. from the back tees. The 450 acre Course #8 is perhaps the most scenic Pinehurst course, with hilly terrain and spectacular views. Course #6, recently redesigned by Fazio in 2005, plays to just over 7,000 yards. The signature, Donald Ross designed, Course #2, known for its challenging greens will challenge the groups on the final day.

Throughout his life, Jim Valvano kept a list of things he wanted to do on note cards in his pocket.  The last note card Pam Valvano pulled out of Jim’s sport coat pocket read, “find a cure for cancer.”  Jim dreamed of an event that would raise significant funds for cancer research.  Thirteen years ago, that dream became a reality in the Jimmy V Celebrity Golf Classic. 

The Golf Classic weekend has been called “A Magical Weekend” by many.  When you mix together generous sponsors and outgoing celebrities, tug on a few heartstrings, and play lots of golf, you will surely find yourself having nothing short of a magical weekend. And proudly, we announce that after thirteen years of magical Golf Classic weekends, we have raised over twelve and a half million dollars for cancer research.  Those dollars help fund research grants at scientific and medical facilities nationwide that will one day help us reach Jim’s ultimate goal of finding a cure for cancer!

We have ALL been touched by cancer.  We have learned that what makes our event so unique is how personal the weekend has become. That’s why we believe that “Cancer is about people.” It’s about our parents and our children, our neighbors and our friends. Beyond all of the science and the statistics, the medicine and the treatments, are the people, their challenges and their triumphs.  The cures for cancer will be found in laboratories and research hospitals, but the battle against cancer is fought in neighborhoods like ours.  We have all been affected by this disease.
